I’m lucky enough to be included in the Disjecta sponsored Portland 2010 - A Biennial of Contemporary Art.  Curator Cris Moss hand picked around 19 of us for a series of solo shows around the city.  My “solo show” will happen on March 20th in a huge abandoned warehouse space transformed to show the work of eight of us lucky winners. I’ll be showing 5 giant, never before seen new prints from this year in the Bering Sea. Come say hello on opening night!

Phil Harris - Sorry to see you go

February 11th, 2010

photo: Corey Arnold

I didn’t know Phil Harris well, but from the few meetings we had in Dutch Harbor, I found him to be a really nice guy…  especially when I wasn’t pointing my camera in his face.  We will all miss his presence in Dutch. The world knows him as the skipper of the Cornelia Marie from Discovery’s Deadliest Catch but now perhaps, he is more famous then ever before. To the friends and family of Phil, I’d like to offer my condolences.

It’s been a rough season in Dutch Harbor with at least five major traumas occurring in the Bering Sea this year. Many are healing and some will never be the same. This will certainly be an Opi season to forget.

New Juxtapoz Photo Book Cover!

September 10th, 2009

Juxtapoz Photo

Via Gingko Press:
Once a year, the Juxtapoz Magazine photo issue is released to eagerly awaiting fans of bleeding-edge photography. For the first time, Juxtapoz Photography pulls together in one volume the featured artists who since 1994 have been redefining a new movement of art and culture through provocative lenswork, groundbreaking camera angles, intense and often irreverent subject matter, moody and vibrant colors, and intimate portraiture. Juxtapoz Photo showcases a diverse group of current photographers, both established and up and coming, with a mix of personal and documentary images. The photos are eclectic in style and subject — from portraits of celebrities and anonymous people, to snapshots from travels abroad and intimate moments captured on film — but all photos are united by the Juxtapoz stamp of intriguing freshness and outsider perspectives.

Contributors include Corey Arnold, Estevan Oriol, Alex Prager, Angela Boatwright, Dylan Maddux, Sam Bassett, Ye Rin Mok, Jesse Pollock, Heather Culp, Andy Mueller and many more.

208 pages, Hardcover, 8” x 10” (203 x 254 mm)

During these past summer months, our artists have been hard at work taking part in or preparing for various shows and projects in both the US and Europe. Here’s a sneak preview with more to come. Christa Parravani is currently part of A River Runs Through Me a group show featuring the photography of Alec Soth, Barbara Bosworth and Elijah Gowin curated by Ariel Shanberg, at the Center for Photography at Woodstock, MA. The show opens on Ocotber 17th. Painter Duston Spear is part of Twenty Year Invitational and Benefit at The Contemporary Art Gallery at Scared Heart University New Fairfield, CT.

As we near the season of harvest, we have asked our artists to gather in New York and indulge us with a preview of the fruits of their labor. Fall Forward offers the opportunity to come together at the gallery and participate in a discourse on the artists’ individual progress as well as celebrate the arrival of a new art season.

Art Ltd Profile

July 31st, 2009

I was recently profiled in Art Ltd. magazine by Portland art critic Richard Speer.  It’s a pretty good summary of what I’m up to these days. Nice of Richard to come for a face to face interview.  Very often interviews these days take place via email questions and it’s too easy to make yourself sound cooler then you really are. That said, I guess I did mention 100 foot waves outloud… but that was my cap i tan’s story telephoned through me.  Everyone adds an extra 10 feet to the wave size, then passes it on.

Last summer I returned to Bristol Bay, Alaska on assignment for Outside Magazine.  This is the place that I landed my first commercial fishing job in 1995. It’s a pristine wilderness area, home to caribou and giant brown bears and one of the last great wild salmon producing river systems in North America that hasn’t been exploited by human tinkering… until now.  One of the world’s largest deposits of Copper and Gold has been discovered in the headwaters of the Nushagak and Kvichak rivers.  Foreign mining companies have converged on the site and hope to dig one of the largest open pit mines in the world, worth hundreds of billions of dollars.  Tailings from the mine could eventually seep their way into the watershed and destroy the salmon habitat forever.  Pick up Outside Magazine this month and check out the hard hitting article written by my pal Tim Sohn.

This summer, I’ll be operating my own fishing vessel in Bristol Bay and will continue my photo project on the region.  More picks and a shiny new portfolio section to come.  Below are some spreads from the Outside article.  They also put up a small web gallery of my picks online.  Thanks to all the fisherman that accommodated me for my one month journey around the bay last year!

Humble Arts Foundation has been doing some great things these days…. Quite active they are in helping emerging photographers breakthrough to a larger audience.  They’ve come a long way since I had my solo-show on their website and last humble released a limited edition print of mine and many others which managed to sell out through the site… so they seem to be finding ways to survive and help new artist folks at the same time.  Just out via Humble is a book called The Collectors Guide to Emerging Art Photography.  I haven’t seen it yet in person, but I think the concept is a good one.  There are 163 photographers included and I believe that I’ve got a one pager inside.  Get ‘em while they’re hot!

NPR Interview

April 22nd, 2008

NPR Slideshow

The nice people at NPR’s Bryant Park Show interviewed me in New York City, cut it up and slapped together a slideshow about crab photography.  You can find it here

1708cover.jpg

I haven’t seen it in person yet but Seattle’s best free weekly, the Stranger put threw my horse and kitty picture on the Cover! The same picture also made the cover of the January/February issue of Adbusters. Although it’s only 2 inches in size, it is proudly displayed next to a portrait of the soon to be late George W. Bush.

Stack of Magazines

November 8th, 2007

reup.gif

A big stack of magazines were in my mailbox upon arrival back in Portland. China’s Photographer’s Companion Magazine August, Monster Children issue #16 (australia) with a nice cover by Mike Giant and RE:UP the photography issue all had interviews and/or photo spreads of my fishin pictures. I’m especially honored to have my photos in the same mag with Glen E. Friedman… who is a long time hero.

This was my second inclusion in juxtapoz this year. Man, I feel lucky. What a great cover by Shepard Farey.

Lots of stuff is happenin’ right now. I have an 8 page photo spread in this months issue of RE:UP magazine as well as a very flattering review of my May solo exhibition at Richard Heller Gallery in Artweek Magazine. Thanks! I’m also featured in the August issue of Juxtapoz Magazine on the third to last page. Oh, yes and one on the cover of the September issue of Fisherman’s News. Oh, and just got a copy of China’s amazingly huge and surprisingly lovely Vision Magazine. The July issue featured a few pages of my fishin’ pictures.

I just received some copies of “Backyard Shakedown”. It’s a new photography book featuring 20 up and comers into the photo world. There is some nice work in there by some great ghetto documentary photographers. I’ve got a two pager in there too. It’s put out by Upper Playground and looks like this.

FHM and Amy Stein

June 15th, 2007

fhm-spread.jpg

FHM (UK) just published a two page interview with me about life as a crab fisherman. Man, what a trashy magazine. In other news I’ll be heading back to Alaska (Ketchikan) next week on assignment with the German Fashion Magazine Neon. Also look out for upcoming articles/photos in Artweek, Juxtapoz, Monster children (AU), RE:UP, and several Chinese publications. Oh, and check out this great photographer’s work: Amy Stein. I haven’t seen anything this great in awhile.

Show is this Saturday. Hope to see you there! Here is the Press Release and map.

Bob Kronbauer of Crown Farmer and Little Giants has started his own online magazine called Mumble. He did a little feature interview with me for the 1st issue. Looks like the mag is worthy of a bookmark. Also below is the invite for the incredible NYC line-up at Higher Pictures opening Saturday.

Bairdi Hell

February 24th, 2007

We’re still in Alaska and have just completed our third tour for Opilio Crab aboard the Rollo. Tonight we leave for the Pribilof Islands to hunt the illusive Bairdi Crab. There is no money to be made off this lousy crab and we are in for possibly a “hell on earth” experience. At least my kitty is on board to contort and hang upside-down for entertainment. This month Blackpool Magazine out of Paris has printed a large portfolio of my images. I haven’t seen it yet, but appears to be a great mag which, like Fecal Face, mixes art with a touch of skateboard culture.

 cover-rs40.jpg

Rolling Stone Magazine Italy just did a 4 page feature and interview about my life as a fisherman / photographer. Weird! It’s the february issue and you have to speak Italian to understand. Nice people over there.

Storm Warning

January 15th, 2007

Blizzard and Storm Warning today, but tomorrow we ship out in search of Opilio Crab near the Pribilof Islands. By the way, the Irish Skipper Magazine has republished my October cover story for National Fisherman on the web. Now you can read it here. In other News, I just finished shooting the very entertaining crew of the Time Bandit for the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.

New Representation

December 23rd, 2006

Happy Christmas. I now have commercial representation by a lovely human named Maren Levinson at Redeye Represents. Contact her at maren@redeyreps.com or 1.323.953.9002. Also, check out some pictures from the Tiny Vices Tokyo Show my stuff is in right now.

Fett Magazine Cover

September 17th, 2006

fettcover.jpg

A new porfolio section will be added in the future on my reindeer slaughter trip with the Samis in Northern Norway. Meanwhile I have two new magazine covers in print. Also three magazines have interviews and photo(s) with me in print this month: Check out Popular Photography, Outside Magazine, and if in the Netherlands, Dutch Audi Magazine. Below is the cover of Fett, a Norwegian feminist magazine. They didn’t require me to be a feminist to do the cover… whew.

Off to Cape Town

July 18th, 2006

treeshowpc.gif

I’m leaving for Cape Town, South Africa next Thursday so if you are reading this from Cape Town, I could be your new friend. If anyone has connections with some fishermen out there send me an email… I’d appreciate it! Congrats to the Deadliest Catch Filmers… they’re nominated for a few Emmy awards.
