Holy Knokke!

March 30th, 2012

Last weekend was the opening of a massive photo festival in Knokke-Heist, Belgium called Wonderland. Christophe De Jaeger, the curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels (BOZAR), chose six international photographers to show their work all over town, indoors and outdoors on a gigantic scale.  The photographers include Michael Light, Ruud Van Empel, Sanna Kannisto, Olaf Otto Becker, Corey Arnold, and Gerco De Ruijter. Knokke is a high class beach town on the coast of Belgium and they spared no expense producing enormous inkjet prints on Canvas and Dibond plates. The show was designed to be a bike tour taking you on a scavenger hunt around the city and countryside. I also had a solo exhibition of Fish-Work images at the Sincfala Museum in Heist. Here are some snaps! Oh, and I was interviewed by A Belgian TV station called Cobra. You can watch the video here.

I’m in London making my way over to Belgium to attend a huge foto festival in the coastal town of Knokke Heist opening on March 24th, 2012.  I’ll have over 20 images from my Fish-Work series blown up to enormous sizes and placed on buildings and walls, and a pavilion all over town.  The Sincfala museum will also be hosting an inside solo exhibition of my work opening the same night.  Five other international photographers were chosen to participate including Olaf Otto Becker (one of my favorites from Deutschland), Michael Light (US), Ruud van Empel (NL), Sanna Kannisto (Finland), and Gerco De Ruijter (NL).  The town of Knokke has really gone all out on this one, should be worth a flight across the pond to see.  The show is curated by Christophe De Jaeger, Director of photography for the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels.

The outdoor exhibition of the festival runs from 25 March to 30 June 2012.
The exhibition at the Museum Sincfala runs from 25 March to 10 June 2012.
The World Press Photo’11 runs from May 11 to June 10, 2012, on display at the Cultural Knokke-Heist.

My image “Opilio Bed” was featured in the March 5, 2012 issue of Der Spiegel, Germany’s leading political magazine. They interviewed my good buddy Matthew Sullivan who stars in many of my pictures from our crabbing days aboard the f/v Rollo.

New Feature in MARE Magazine

February 11th, 2012

MARE, the beautifully designed German magazine dedicated to the subject of the Sea, has published an 18 page interview about my various Fish-Work projects in the Feb/March Issue.  It’s the largest and one of the best designed magazine features I’ve ever had.  Thanks to the writer, Holger Gertz, who made the trek across the pond to talk about the sea. Now if I can find someone to translate.

I was interviewed by the Italian writer Matteo Bordone for Italian Rolling Stone last spring.  This was sort of a 4 year follow up after since they did a larger feature on my Fish-Work Bering Sea project back in 2007.  I have no idea what it says, but I know it’s about my new salmon life at Graveyard Point in Bristol Bay. I think with Euro Zone meltdown happening, stories about escaping into the wilds of Alaska are becoming more appealing to editors.  Here is the tearsheet from the June 2011 issue (still catchin’ up!).

Fish-Work: The Bering Sea was recently named one of the best photo books of the year by American Photo Magazine. Thanks!

In celebration of, how about free domestic shipping and discounted international shipping on all signed copies purchased through my little web store before Dec 10? Makes a great stocking stuffer I’ve heard.

American Photo - November 2012

When Geert Stadeus from Belgium based Snoecks magazine contacted me about showcasing my work, I had no idea what to expect nor that my sexy little cat “Kitty” would be featured on the cover. I just got my copy in the mail and pretty excited about the good company of some of my favorite photographers including Alec Soth, Alex Prager, Carl de Keyzer, Simen Johan, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Charles Freger, and Simon Norfolk.  Snoecks is an annual magazine – more book-like in scope – It’s been around since 1925, and has apparently achieved mainstream appeal in Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond?   My cover was part of a limited addition as the book usually features an incredibly cheesy 80′s style glamour fashion photo on the cover… quite in contrast to the selection of serious art photography portfolios found inside. A friend of mine with Dutch roots told me that her family has collected Snoecks since the dawn of time, and that her American friends when visiting would head strait to their Snoecks stash to catch a glimpse of some fine  euro-erotic photography that parents in the U.S. wouldn’t normally stock on their shelves.

It’s been a big few years for my Kitty and Horse Fisherman photo.   Despite being ripped off all over the web, it’s shown up on the cover of many publications far and wide.  Here is a short list of covers that Kitty has shown up on around the world.

Artension - French Magazine - 2009

I suppose I should be flattered when a French Art magazine “Artension” puts a web compressed jpeg of the image on the cover of their mag without even asking me permission, or asking for a high res image.  One of my french spies spotted the mag on a newstand so I called them and they said:  ”We sent you an email and you didn’t respond so we decided to print it anyway”.

This is the oddest of all: a great photographer named Harvey Benge sent me an email back in ’09 saying that he’d come across this flyer on a pole in Auckland, New Zealand.

My monograph Fish-Work: The Bering Sea

My first book, Fish-Work: The Bering Sea published by Nazraeli Press, is back in print with signed copies available at www.fish-work.com. The book was recently selected as one of the PDN Photo Annual 2010 Books of the Year. It will also be featured in the November issue of American PHOTO magazine as one of the best books of the year and has fielded favorable reviews in FOAM magazine (Netherlands) among others Thanks!

I teamed up with the amazing Holly Andres to make a little video of the book online HERE

One of the great honors of my life was being invited to speak in front of over 2000 people at the Semi-Permanent Creative Conference in Sydney, Australia back in May of 2011.  I arrived not knowing much about any of the other speakers, but left truly inspired, with talented and lovely new friends.  Thanks again to Andrew Johnston and Murray Bell for the invite and helping me overcome a pretty severe life long fear of public speaking.   I just discovered this wonderful and nostalgic video compililation created from the conference.

Nazraeli Press has just released my second book which is a collaboration with my Father, entitled  Fishing with My Dad 1978-1995. The book is part of Nazraeli’s One Picture Book subscription series which showcases obscure and previously unseen work in a small format.   The book is limited to 500 copies and includes an original print signed by myself and my dad.  Most are already pre-sold but there are a very small amount available for purchase on Nazraeli’s website.   These are photographs my father made throughout my childhood, growing up as a hardcore sportfisherman in Southern California. Here is a little video made by the amazing Holly Andres.  Thanks Holly!

While I was salmon fishing in Bristol Bay the last couple months, Pacific Fishing Magazine (A West Coast commercial fishing trade magazine) slapped one of my images of the beautiful engineer of the f/v Rollo, Brian Greer holding some of our giant king crab from a couple seasons back.  Seems that the image matched up perfectly with the tag line:  ”Endangered Species: Young Fishermen”  Thanks for being a good sport Brian.  They dropped in a nice double spread review of my book: Fish-Work: The Bering Sea, which had already sold out by the publication date!  More copies arriving in September!

I’m flying off to Sydney today and will open a group show at the Paper Mill Gallery, in Sydney on Thursday night, May 12 from 6-9pm. Hope to see you there!  The show is part of the Semi-Permanent schedule of events for the weekend.  I’ll be showing three new pieces from my Fish-Work Europe series.

Also, swing by Semi-Permanent on Friday at 1pm when I’m scheduled to bore 2000 onlookers with my slideshow of naked animals, recent travels in illegal countries, and childhood photos of me with fish blood on my diapers.

I’m honored to have been invited to speak at the Semi-Permanent Creative Conference in Sydney, Australia on May 13-14, 2011. There will be an associated group exhibition (TBA) and I’ll be signing and selling copies of  my new book:  Fish-Work: The Bering Sea.  2000 eye pairs will supposedly be present (gulp).  I’m really excited to get back to wombatland.  Don’t be (a) stranger(s).

I’m very excited to announce the release of my first photography monograph published by Nazraeli Press. FISH-WORK The Bering Sea is an 80 page, large format book of images from my seven years working as a commercial fisherman in the Bering Sea waters of Alaska.  It was an honor to work with the very kind Chris Pichler (founder of Nazraeli Press) on the design and layout of the book.  Nazraeli has long been one of my favorite photography book publishers and has in his catalogue some amazing printed matter by many of my favorites: Todd Hido, Gus Van Sant, Alesssandra Sanguinetti, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Daido Moriyama, Michael Kenna, and Mark Steinmetz.

You can pre-order SIGNED copies direct from my studio in the new Fish-Workshop online.  The first edition is limited to only 1000 copies, so I’m not sure how long they will last! Books will be shipping sometime in late December. Below is the press release with a bit more info:

The photographs in “Fish-Work: The Bering Sea” capture moments from Arnold’s grueling retreats as a crew member aboard a fishing boat to the Bering Sea. With scenes of boat life so vivid that some shots can induce fear or seasickness, the artist’s perspective also reveals the tender soulfulness of a fisherman’s extended life at sea. His skillful compositions depict the simultaneous bravery, toil, humor and gumption that “fish-work” demands. Yet the series also illuminates the aesthetic sublimity that can only be experienced, ultimately, by those willing to risk their lives where the sea breaks its back. Having survived several seasons afloat these icy and unforgiving waters, we are lucky that Arnold has taken time to document his artistic impressions of this rare lifestyle and extended us a vicarious glimpse.

A graduate of the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Corey Arnold lives and works in Portland, and now runs a commercial salmon fishing boat in Bristol Bay, Alaska.  His work has been exhibited worldwide.  Recent publications featuring Arnold’s work include the Juxtapoz Photo Book, Esquire, The Sunday Telegraph, Rolling Stone, Outside, The Paris Review, The Collector’s Guide to Emerging Art Photography and PDN’s 30.

“Fish-Work: The Bering Sea” is published by Nazraeli Press in conjunction with Charles A. Hartman Fine Art. It is printed in an oversized format in a first edition of 1,000 casebound copies.

I’ve recently been commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trust to photograph the state of commercial fishing in the European Union.  The project will continue over several trips throughout 2010. Keep your eyes peeled for a whole new body of Fish-Work gone global later this year.  I’m on the lookout for contacts in coastal Ireland, Scotland, the Shetlands, Holland, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and the Canary Islands so if anyone has connections with the fishing industry in these places, feel free to drop me a line at corey@coreyfishes.com

I’m lucky enough to be included in the Disjecta sponsored Portland 2010 – A Biennial of Contemporary Art.  Curator Cris Moss hand picked around 19 of us for a series of solo shows around the city.  My “solo show” will happen on March 20th in a huge abandoned warehouse space transformed to show the work of eight of us lucky winners. I’ll be showing 5 giant, never before seen new prints from this year in the Bering Sea. Come say hello on opening night!

Juxtapoz Photo

Via Gingko Press:
Once a year, the Juxtapoz Magazine photo issue is released to eagerly awaiting fans of bleeding-edge photography. For the first time, Juxtapoz Photography pulls together in one volume the featured artists who since 1994 have been redefining a new movement of art and culture through provocative lenswork, groundbreaking camera angles, intense and often irreverent subject matter, moody and vibrant colors, and intimate portraiture. Juxtapoz Photo showcases a diverse group of current photographers, both established and up and coming, with a mix of personal and documentary images. The photos are eclectic in style and subject — from portraits of celebrities and anonymous people, to snapshots from travels abroad and intimate moments captured on film — but all photos are united by the Juxtapoz stamp of intriguing freshness and outsider perspectives.

Contributors include Corey Arnold, Estevan Oriol, Alex Prager, Angela Boatwright, Dylan Maddux, Sam Bassett, Ye Rin Mok, Jesse Pollock, Heather Culp, Andy Mueller and many more.
