My image “Opilio Bed” was featured in the March 5, 2012 issue of Der Spiegel, Germany’s leading political magazine. They interviewed my good buddy Matthew Sullivan who stars in many of my pictures from our crabbing days aboard the f/v Rollo.

I’m in a group show in Portland, Oregon opening at Charles A. Hartman Fine Art on Thursday, March 1, 2012 among the company of some great dead guys and some of my favorite living photographers. Wow, lots of good shows this Thursday. Also check out Clayton Cotterell’s Unarmed opening at PNCA the same night. Many great NYC photographers seem to be making the pilgrimage to Portland these days.

Charles A. Hartman Fine Art Presents:
GUN: A COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS
February 29 – March 31, 2012
Opening reception on First Thursday, March 1st, 5:00—8:00pm

Portland, OR—Guns are a loaded subject. Their renderings in art are as varied as people’s views regarding them. From rifles for hunting to handguns for protection to weapons used in war and violent crime, guns are a part of American history, culture and mythology. With GUN: A Collection of Photographs, Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is excited to present an exhibition of compelling images both historical and contemporary. From tintype to c-print, the exhibition includes classic images by photographers such as Frederick Sommer, Danny Lyon, William Klein, Elliott Erwitt and Berenice Abbott, as well as recent works by gallery artists Mark Steinmetz, Raymond Meeks, Jason Langer and Corey Arnold.

My friend Eugénie Frerichs is opening a new exhibition of photographs, a series of re-enactments from her recovery from a difficult surgery.  I love these! Stop by for a look on Thursday night at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.  Details below!

Heather Treadway is a multi-talented fashion designer, musician, dancer, etc. from Portland, Oregon.  In the fashion realm, she specializes in designing and sewing unique handmade capes. I spent a weekend in Eastern Oregon near the Painted Hills and Blue Basin road tripping and photographing Heather wearing some of her recent designs.  You may also know her as the stand up percussionist from the band Explode into Colors (rest in peace).  Buy her stuff on Etsy or email her to make a custom order.  She’ll make you something great.

Big Sur Holidays

January 2nd, 2012

I’m just home from a two week road trip to San Diego and back.  My good friend Greg Hennes of Antler an Co.  shot this little iphone shot of me planking an old oak trip in Big Sur. I love that place.

One of the great assets to being in your 30′s is that suddenly talented friends seem to find their way. The 30′s are a time to get shit done instead of dreaming and playing and struggling with no end in site like the 20′s often feel like.  Well, that’s not to say that the 30′s are a time to stop playing and dreaming, but it is a time when you can also start your own company that makes stuff to keep everyone else in the world dreaming, adventuring, laughing outloud, and staying warm and dry in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

My friend, Benji Wagner, an already multi-talented photographer and filmmaker is guilty of stepping up his 30′s for the benefit of mankind and creating something great called POLER STUFF. Poler is a heat bag company, a camping gear brand, and creator of a snuggie-like sleeping bag that I’m wearing right now as I type out this blog post.  I’m a skateboarder, snowboarder, crappy surfer, and I like the woods…  Poler is the dream merger of simplicity, style and practicality in a gear brand that embodies this lifestyle.

I’ve got some incredible journeys coming up in the next year and proudly rocking Poler along the way and will be contributing to their beautiful adventure series. I’m now on the Poler team, a childhood sponsorship dream come true!  Enough of the propaganda, just check out the Poler Stuff site, and the visually inspiring Poler Blog and support small business this year when searching for Christmas gifts for your loved ones. Oh, and here’s a nice video to get you in the mood.

Holly Andres at Jackson

October 25th, 2011

Holly recently created a curious new installation with fresh digs from the archive and new old frames to fill the wall at one of my favorite galleries in the Greater South, Jackson Fine Art, Atlanta.   It is great to see more well deserved traffic to this series and a lot of care by the gallery to craft the experience of Sparrow Lane.  Holly Andres is my buddy and an inspiring force in my life and this series deserves a flight to Atlanta to see the prints in person.  Thanks Hol.

Hanging Shit on Antlers

December 7th, 2010

My really good buddy Greg and his lovely lady friend Jessica came up with a really nice functional organic product/gift idea and I’m not just saying so that he will flow me free antlers. Antler and Co. makes wall mounted antlers with special hardware to stick directly out of your wall and hold a lot of heavy stuff like coats, books, axes, dead baby seals, and whatever else you have laying around the house that might look great hanging from an antler.  They are pretty class looking items, and best of all, the design, packaging, custom stamped and numbered metal bands, cedar chips as packing material, etc make the whole experience of Portlandizing your house with Antlers easy and a pretty cool gift.   I’m about to make a whole wall of these things displaying some of my favorite photography books at home.   Check the website! www.antlerandco.com

Greg is also an impressive builder, inventor, and photographer.  He’s got some nice photos on flickr from Iceland, and pictures of a new timber frame cabin that I wish I would have helped them build in northern Minnesota this year.

Cinders Show in Brooklyn

October 14th, 2010

I’ve got one photograph hanging in a show in Brooklyn that opens tomorrow.   Here is the info below.
Sorry I won’t be present as I am currently trimming my beard in the bathroom of a pub in Harlingen, Netherlands.

Corey Arnold, Patrick Casey, Mark Chariker, John Copeland, Sophia Cara Frydman, Joseph Hart, Cody Hoyt, Alex Lukas, Eddie Martinez, Niall Mcclelland, Steak Mtn., Caleb Neelon, Hilary Pecis, Eric Saline, Zac Scheinbaum, Andrew Schoultz, Mark Schoening, Conor Thompson, Paul Wackers, Brian Willmont

Plain Air is the second in a series of exhibitions put together by the loose-knit collective/publishing-printmaking project called Apenest. Beginning as a way to create a rad and cost-effective art book, artists Brian Willmont and Cody Hoyt started Apenest by collecting artwork from their favorite artists, selling the work to collectors themselves and then taking the proceeds to self-publish their first book featuring everyone who contributed. They have since published 2 massive, beautiful full-color books that act as a wonderful compendium of underground contemporary art and have begun exhibiting their work together in a series of thematic group shows.

Plain Air explores the theme of landscape as the space we inhabit, falling somewhere between reality and fantasy. Some artists address the topic head on; Patrick Casey’s updated New England wall art puts a shocking twist on familiar imagery, while Conor Thompson has a more topical approach focusing on the alienation of the modern landscape. Others transform the idea of landscape completely as a form of space beyond physical constrictions and break into its total abstraction.

10_uncommon.jpg

A company called Uncommon is making a line of artist Iphone cases.  Most of the art comes from the Fecal Face / Juxtapoz taste.  Pretty amazing new technology and well designed site.  You can choose from 10 of my most popular images and layout the photos on the case however you’d like.

Flak Photo

January 13th, 2010

Andy Adams has a pretty nice photography site called Flak Photo which is a good source for inspiration and a glance at the goings on in the artsy photo world.  One of my Arcticness pics was recently featured on the site.  You can have a look here: Click

Today I hung out with Portlander Vanessa Renwick who is pretty much an amazing human being in too many ways to list. She has a homemade sauna in her backyard in the shape of a giant Raven’s head, for example.  She also creates beautiful art in the form of films and installations and is the woman behind the Oregon Department of Kick Ass. I was shooting a picture of Vanessa and her dogs when suddenly Fox the dog levitated into the air and hovered out through the skylight in the ceiling.  He flew around in the backyard for a bit (my camera ran out of battery just after the start of levitation) then touched down in driveway and came back inside.  Apparently this happens all the time at the Renwick house.  I thought it was a bit strange but enjoyed the show nonetheless.

Red Gold was created last year by a small crew of independent filmmakers: Travis Rummel, Ben Knight, and Lauren Oakes.  It is one of the most powerful environmental documentaries I’ve seen.  The trailer is a great introduction to Bristol Bay salmon fishing and the battle with Pebble Mine.

My Friend Holly Andres has a nice segment on OPB about how she works and her journey as an artist.

Various Photographs is the catalog for the exhibition of the same name, curated by Tim Barber for the 2008 New York Photo Festival.  You can find at least 3 of my pictures in there.  Tim’s kicking ass lately with the announcement of his own publishing company, T.V. Books.  He runs the notorious website Tiny Vices and has a new books series being released by Aperture.
