Back in March/April of this year, I tagged along for some Pollock dragging on the 149 ft. Pacific Prince out of Dutch Harbor, Alaska. The assignment from OnEarth Magazine (NRDC) was to document the fleets efforts to avoid excessive salmon bycatch and capture the overall feeling of life as a trawlerman in the Bering Sea. Here are some of the spreads as well as a few I like that couldn’t fit into the story. I love assignments that apply 100% to my life’s work.

Surf Dutch Harbor
February 9th, 2010
On rare occasions, a surfable wave appears at the spit in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. These pics were taken on Jan 18, 2010 actually during twilight hours. But you’ve got to wear a seagull destruction helmet to survive the “beakings“. The wave breaks at the base of the Icicle Seafoods fish guts and bits discharge pipe so watch out for 10,000 hungry birds, 300 pound halibut and boat sized sleeper sharks nipping at your toes.

Summertime Salmon
September 10th, 2009

I spent June and July this summer commercial fishing for salmon in Bristol Bay and following up with pictures on last years Outside magazine story about the proposed Pebble mine. It’s been very busy over here with magazine assignments, my salmon business and upcoming group exhibitions so I’ve only just begun to sort through the summers huge arsenal of new pictures! As soon as I’m home for a solid week or two, I’ll be adding a ton of new images to the site. Hopefully, I’m not crying wolf again this time.
Greetings from Bristol Bay, Alaska
July 20th, 2008
I’ve been off the grid in Alaska for nearly a month now photographing the salmon fishermen of Bristol Bay, Alaska. I can’t wait to develop this film and hope that my digital files make the trip after my backup hard drive failed… probably due to jarring skiff rides across the bay. More pics and hopefully a more regularly updated blog will come.
Stack of Magazines
November 8th, 2007

A big stack of magazines were in my mailbox upon arrival back in Portland. China’s Photographer’s Companion Magazine August, Monster Children issue #16 (australia) with a nice cover by Mike Giant and RE:UP the photography issue all had interviews and/or photo spreads of my fishin pictures. I’m especially honored to have my photos in the same mag with Glen E. Friedman… who is a long time hero.
This was my second inclusion in juxtapoz this year. Man, I feel lucky. What a great cover by Shepard Farey.

Bairdi Hell
February 24th, 2007
We’re still in Alaska and have just completed our third tour for Opilio Crab aboard the Rollo. Tonight we leave for the Pribilof Islands to hunt the illusive Bairdi Crab. There is no money to be made off this lousy crab and we are in for possibly a “hell on earth” experience. At least my kitty is on board to contort and hang upside-down for entertainment. This month Blackpool Magazine out of Paris has printed a large portfolio of my images. I haven’t seen it yet, but appears to be a great mag which, like Fecal Face, mixes art with a touch of skateboard culture.
Tiny Vices – Paris
February 9th, 2007
On temporary eye injury sick leave in Anchorage, AK. Nothing permanent though. I’ve got some photos up at Tim Barber’s Tiny Vices installation in Paris. Check it out. I’m in and out of email contact for 3 more weeks so sorry if I haven’t responded. Also, my good buddy Aubrey Hays has a new website of photos. Check it out here.

Blizzard and Storm Warning today, but tomorrow we ship out in search of Opilio Crab near the Pribilof Islands. By the way, the Irish Skipper Magazine has republished my October cover story for National Fisherman on the web. Now you can read it here. In other News, I just finished shooting the very entertaining crew of the Time Bandit for the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch.

Whaling Story in Outside Magazine
March 2nd, 2006
En route to Oslo. Soon to be in Lofoten shooting the cod fishermen of North Norway. Look for the May issue of OUTSIDE magazine coming in a month or so. There you will find an feature on Norwegian whaling with photos by coreyfishes. Also look for my photos on the “Deadliest Catch” ad spreads appearing in Outside, Field and Stream, and Outdoor Life this or next month! Also just announced is the start date of the new “Deadliest Catch” on the 28th. of March on the Discovery Channel.
Opilio 2006
January 15th, 2006
Back on board the Rollo for another round of Opilio crabbin’. As I write, we are anchored up at St Paul Island in the middle of the Bering Sea. Winds are blowing from the North at 40 knots. Temp is 18 degrees Farenheit. Ice is forming on the deck and we are preparing for heavy freezing spray for the next week of fishing. The discovery film crew is back on board with cameras waiting to capture our boat as it turns into a giant ice cube. Meanwhile I’m writing a story with photos for National Fisherman magazine, shooting once again for the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” and making a website for our boat. Have a nice day.
Bad Whaling and a new season of Deadliest Catch
September 20th, 2005
Another week of whaling aboard the Bolga has produced zero whales once again. Bad weather conditions have spoiled our luck. The season has come to an end and the bloody whale photos will have to wait until next year! In other news, me and the crew of the F/V Rollo have been chosen to star in next seasons episodes of “Deadliest Catch” on the Discovery Channel. If you haven’t seen the show yet (I haven’t), I heard some of the other crabbers say its a decent show. Here is a link to the “Deadliest Catch” homepage.
